How to be deeply thankful in a world that seems to crumble – Part 1

In our current politically unstable country, it is becoming increasingly easy to be bearers of doom.  As women we have to be so careful of what we say and how we say it.  Whether you want to know this or not, we are created to be bearers of life…not just physically, but spiritually and emotionally as well.

This is not a political post at all, but rather just a strong reminder that we cannot fall into the trap of bearing negativity.  We were called to be light-bearers, not doom-spreaders.  The question is:  How do we do this?  How do we challenge the status-quo, continuously?

When I sat down to really think about this, the answer came ever so softly…be thankful.  It might sound completely irrelevant, but just think about it for a while.  What flows out of your mouth when you are deeply thankful?  Positive, uplifting words; encouragement; joy; patience….  When we live and speak from a thankful heart, continuously, we will eventually be able to change the world; to challenge the status-quo of negativity.  The question is:  How do we cultivate a positive attitude?  I’ve come up with five practices that seem to help.  In this post I will discuss two of them.

1)  Be positive

This is a deeply mental exercise.  The only way that you can truly sustain a positive attitude, is if you fill your entire being with it.  Here’s what I mean.  You have to consistently fill your

  • mind
  • body
  • and soul

with the truth.  The truth in any account.  It’s too easy to just assume that whatever someone else is saying, is the truth.  It is often just half of the truth.  So, before you get too upset – find out what the truth about any give situation is.

I want to touch on another subject here, which is something completely different, BUT – you have to be physically positive.  What I mean by this is that you really have to pay attention to your body, keeping it healthy (by eating what it needs, not just what you want), and exercising!  I do not want to go into a scientific discussion of the benefits of a physically healthy body to your mind and soul, but I do want to encourage you to read up on this, and be active!

2)  Positive people

It is imperative to surround yourself with positive people.  If not, you will just be sucked into the negative talk going on around you.  And, rather than creating a positive atmosphere, you will just be adding to the negativity.  You will add to the fact that things seem worse than they actually are…

Practically, if you can’t find positive people in the room, simply walk out….  Absolutely nothing is stopping you.

So, there you have the first two practice steps.  Be sure to let me know how you’ve managed to incorporate them into your life!

  1. Thanks for the reminder! I agree fully with you on surrounding yourself with positive people. I have found so many times that although you try to change the atmosphere in a negative room (by being the one positive person in the room) there are some days that the “room” just doesn’t want any changing. Those are the days you go change another “room”. Look forward to Part 2.

  2. So true! Lets stop the negative talking and be possitive. Good advice to walk away from negative talking or from people constantly critisising you.
